A bitter snow storm helps them both to realize that life is all about taking chances.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This sweet and playful story starts dismally, with a nasty blizzard and nothing much in the cupboard. Jim and Johnny make a trek to the grocery store to find the shelves stripped of most goods. We meet them walking back with bags of oddments, when a pristine snowfield beckons. Johnny’s willing to see the adventure in their situation, and leaps to make footprints and snowballs. He has to tease Jim into dropping his worries long enough to play. Once home, the memories of almost kisses and the need to warm up and dry off lead the two neighbors into confidences, revelations, and presently into bed.
The story arc isn’t at all complex, but sweetly done, with natural-feeling conversations and small admissions—the two have lived next door and helped each other without really learning much detail. While I was a little startled by two years and no gaydar pings, the disclosures of private sorrows and histories built the intimacy between them detail by detail, very nicely done. The declarations of love startled me more; while I love a friends to lovers story, the jump to “I love you” was extremely fast.
I wish one of the characters had been named differently; having two J names made me work a little harder to keep the men clear in my mind and to keep POV focused. One POV change was clearly marked by a section break but there seemed to be more though the wobbles might have been reader error. Johnny and Carl or something else different would have reduced this issue.
This was a delightful diversion all the same—the author made me feel the snow down my neck and the sweetness of the embraces, and left me happy for the couple. It’s a hot read about a cold day.
Full disclosure: The author sent a ficlet based on a prompt picture for Thousand Word Thursday, but she had more to say about that snowy mess, and I must make sure Juniper Gray has more pictures to inspire her.
Snow Day is out!
I posted this horrible stormy picture a few months back, and author Juniper Gray saw all sorts of possibilities in it! She sent us a little taste for Thousand Word Thursday,  but Jim and Johnny got a much larger story from that blizzardy walk home. Torquere Press just released it, it's called Snow Day.
A Thousand Word Thursday Story from Juniper Gray
Snow Day
Johnny's back arched as Jim's hands slid underneath him. The caress of those fingertips, firm over his hot, naked skin, left him breathless. Jim was above him, heavy weight between Johnny's thighs, hips rising and falling in a gentle, tender rhythm. Johnny pulled the covers tight around Jim's shoulders to shield him from the cold, and Jim smiled against his lips.
Little more than an hour ago, they had been just friends. Best friends, and neighbours for two years. They'd taken a long, cold walk through the snow that had made Jim more miserable even than he was usually, which Johnny hadn't thought possible. The past six months had left a mark of creeping sadness on Jim's soul, and Johnny had seen it, done his best to comfort Jim and get him through it, though almost everything he'd tried had been ineffectual.
He'd loved Jim for a long time. He wasn't one for trite hyperbole, but Jim had stirred something in him the first moment they first met. It had been a summer evening, and the air had been thick with the rich scent of honeysuckle. Jim had strolled up his drive with a couple of beers and a sincere smile. They'd talked for hours. Gotten close. Johnny had always silently wished there could be more, but he'd kept it to himself.
Little more than an hour ago, they'd come in from the cold together, damp in some places and sodden in others, desperate to get warm. He'd made them both coffee. Jim had kissed him, up against the counter. Took him by surprise. Breached the thick veneer of friendship between them when Johnny hadn't known it could ever be broken. They'd looked at each other for a long moment afterwards. Jim had smiled, and suddenly Johnny couldn't feel the cold any more.
Jim's fingers slid between his, clasping them against the pillow. Perhaps Jim merely needed someone to comfort him, but for now Jim's touch and kiss and movement were enough to convince Johnny it was more than just that.
He thought about the walk back uphill through the snowfall, both of them laden with groceries, and smiled. He had the bitter cold and the deep snow to thank for the thaw in Jim's heart.
Thank you Juniper! Those boys sure did need to get warm!  And a little bird told me (looking at that pic, it could have been a snowy owl or maybe a penguin) that Juniper has some more thoughts about snow, love, and a couple of guys, so we'll keep our eyes out for that.
Juniper has a new short out!
Imposition by Juniper Bell
Imposition by Juniper Gray
Publisher: Torquere Press
Genre: Sci-Fi, GLBT
Length: 215 pages
Summary: Therse Bodan is a Navy Lieutenant of exceptional caliber, approached with an offer of his dream position in the upper echelons of Navy Command. Therse is on a transport cruise ship, returning from a far-flung region of space with only his best friend and chronic under-achiever Genham Drisjic for company when he realizes that if he accepts the offer, he and Genham may never see one another again. Therse wants to confess his long-held feelings for Genham but is afraid he might be pushed away.
The arrival of Meitou, a member of the military's secretive elite, aboard their quiet ship throws them into turmoil, forcing Therse to confront events in his past, and making Genham face up to feelings of his own. And the ship itself is no stranger to dark secrets...
In space, no one can hear you weep.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Even a large spaceship can feel too small when your only crewmate keeps getting in your face. Therse Bodan can't get away from Genham Drisjic, isn't sure he wants to, and has a huge desire to smack Gen when they're together. Imposition by Juniper Gray gives us the complicated course of their careers and relationship.

Therse and Gen go back all the way to their first days as new recruits. Even as cadets they had a stormy relationship, where friendship didn't quite apply, nor did competition. Now, when their career paths could diverge considerably, they are still sparring. Each has his secrets and his guilt, piled on in layers with every major step in their careers.

It isn't enough to be saddled with a cranky AI to run the ship; tensions rise further when Meitou comes aboard. He's a master manipulator; neither Therse nor Gen stand a chance. It was never really clear why Meitou wanted to shake them up, because his agenda seemed larger than toying with them just because he could, although he probably wouldn't turn down the chance for some fun in the course of hitching a ride on the larger ship. It just seems too calculated to be only his travel entertainment.

Gray paints the relationships and the manipulations masterfully – with one arch comment her characters send one another into frenzies of lust, doubt, and self examination. This is the meat of the book; watching Meitou practically reach out to punch a button with a word. Age and treachery beat youth and enthusiasm, and take it to bed, too – there is a lot of sex here, but it all drives the plot. By the time Meitou departs, Therse and Gen are so addled they might just forget to lie to one another.

What seems to be missing is a sense of proportion: one of Gen's actions early in their association is so heinous in its effect that it's surprising the other cadets didn't put him out the friendship airlock, and Therse beats himself up for an offense far more than it could deserve. There are hints of larger plans for Gen that make taking the time to administer Meitou's special brand of attitude adjustment worthwhile, but only hints.

If there's a sequel planned, then many of these issues could be resolved, including the open question of how Therse's promotion will affect the pair. The result could be space opera along the line of David Weber or Elizabeth Moon. What's here is a great romance element and a great set-up for the science fiction element that I'd love to read to the end. Imposition gets our two lieutenants out of their ruts, and we can hope Juniper Gray is planning to give them their worthy opponent.  4 Marbles

A Thousand Word Thursday Story from Juniper Gray

Half-naked. Half-naked already, skin prickling at the empty cold after a day spent beneath a warm, safe and familiar work shirt. Everything about this situation was new, uncertain – his shameless inspection by the woman at the entrance, the tight clothes and the knowing smiles of the people he'd passed on his way in, the smell of latex and leather from hot bodies locked in pleasure somewhere behind closed doors.

He'd wanted it to be this way. He'd asked for no nonsense, in and out without fuss. He'd made an appointment, he'd kept it (much to his own surprise), and now he needed to get what he came for and leave. That was how the world worked. How his world worked. He couldn't remember what had possessed him to come to a fetish club in the first place, but he was here and half-naked now so there would be no going back. They had something he thought he might need so he would try and take it, and that was that.

The man they'd given him was called John. He wondered if that was his real name. Not that it mattered or was remotely relevant to the situation at hand. He had a bad habit of getting distracted – his mind was wandering away already, sneaking back to well-trodden self-deprecating territory.

“Stephen,” John said, rich, deep voice washing off the hard concrete walls and making them seem just a little softer.

“Yes,” he replied, hating the waver in his voice, hating the fear in it. His own body was betraying him piece by piece – the chill on his skin, the increased pace of his breathing, the tremor in his hands that just wouldn't stop no matter how hard he clenched his fists. John was gazing at him, studying him with clever eyes and Stephen knew he was being figured out. He was fresh meat, blood in the water, out of his depth and desperate for something to cling to and John could see all this, Stephen was certain.

But this was what he wanted. What he'd asked for specifically. No nonsense. No fuss. John wouldn't be the type of guy to fuck around. John stepped towards him and Stephen fought bitterly with the urge to step away. He'd come for this, he was damn well going to go through with it.

“They told me you were new, but even if they hadn't it's easy to see.” A faint, lop-sided smile, caught half-way between sympathy and mockery.

Stephen lit up inside with a familiar flame, feeling himself straighten and broaden in response to the quip. “What's your point?” he asked, glaring over at John.

John's smile broadened. It was a smile of victory now, though Stephen couldn't see where the victory was. “No point,” John said, “just an observation.”

John was standing in front of him now. Stephen wasn't sure when he'd gotten so close.

“Here, I'll make another one,” John said, leaning in. “You're damn good looking.” He'd whispered it, but not in a lurid way. It was merely the best wrapping for the complement.

Stephen felt himself blush for the first time in a long time, but kept John's gaze. He needed to be strong here. He wasn't a weakling and he wasn't going to let himself be taken easily. At least this situation was simple – both he and John knew where they stood, and he had a better chance of getting something worthwhile out of this encounter than meeting some guy at a club and taking him home.

John punctured Stephen's ruminations by shoving him suddenly up against the wall. Rough, cold concrete scraped against his tingling skin. But it wasn't the concrete he was thinking about; it was John's hot palm, pressed to his chest.

“Normally it takes me a while to get a guy's heart racing this fast.” A knowing smile. They all wore that same smile like it was a fucking uniform.

“I'm fine,” Stephen insisted, eyes locked to John's. Pretty, deep-hazel eyes set in strong features. Stephen found himself distracted again.

John wasn't distracted. John had a goal and was working swiftly towards it. Stephen was a target he needed to meet, the more efficiently the better. Didn't matter what the workplace was, work was always the same. Endless deadlines and needs to be met; all other people's needs. And other people's needs were always the most important.

John's hand slipped up Stephen's chest, gentler than he would have expected. By the time it reached his throat it was almost a caress. Then John's palm was over Stephen's chin, fingers splayed possessively around his jaw as he tilted Stephen's head back against the wall. Stephen let him,  reluctantly.

“For a man who came here to be dominated you're remarkably resistant,” John told him matter-of-factly.

Stephen started a little at the comment, but John was calm, unmoving. A thumb slid over Stephen's lips, rolling his bottom lip down a little. Stephen refused to open his mouth. John leaned in, lips brushing Stephen's neck, his body warm and close. Stephen shuddered despite himself.

“Relax,” he was told, in that reassuring silk-smooth whisper. “I already know what you want without you even having to tell me.”

Stephen glanced at John uncertainly. They'd known each other ten minutes. He'd spent half his life packaging himself into nice sealed boxes, there was no way someone could figure him out in that amount of time.

But John persisted. “You want to give in willingly rather than have me take something from you. You want me to know what you need without you having to ask, and you want me to give it to you as though it's what I want so you're absolved of the responsibility for your own pleasure.”

Stephen just stared at him, feeling his own cock firming swiftly. That was everything he needed. Everything he needed so badly. Was he really that transparent? He wasn't sure he cared any more even if he was.

“But first,” John continued, smearing his thumb gently across Stephen's lips, “you want to know if I'm worthy of your submission.”

Stephen opened his mouth, and John's thumb slid inside. No nonsense. No fuss. Simple and straight to the point, just like he'd wanted.

A Thousand Word Thursday Story from Juniper Gray

Coffee and Keys

“You sure you don't want one?”

“You know I don't drink that tasteless crap.”

Glen shot him a flat look and returned to the precise preparations of his instant coffee; black-one-sugar. Steve stood with his back against the sink, watching Glen as he added the right amount of water to the right amount of granules, stirred in the right amount of sugar. The thick aroma filled the air of Steve's small kitchen. The scent of stolen mornings with Glen. Not that Steve would ever let on he thought of the instant-coffee smell in such a way.

Glen set the steaming mug aside and sealed the little foil packet his brand of coffee came in, then tucked it safely back into its cardboard box. His hands were so gentle, their movements so exact. Glen was a stickler for order – liked to keep things just the way he wanted them. That was why his mug and coffee and sugar and even spoon had made their way into Steve's apartment. For mornings like this. He would have brought the water too if he could've.

And yet, there were certain facets to Glen's life where order didn't seem to matter. He wasn't overly particular about cleanliness - at least not to the level of obsession he had with the particulars of his coffee – he wasn't massively vain, he never lectured Steve or tried to introduce order into his pretty-much spontaneous existence. Even now, performing his morning ritual, Glen was only half-dressed and only the shorts even belonged to him; the shirt was the first thing he'd found on the floor after rolling out of bed, and combined with his stubble and bed-hair he looked like something handed in at the YMCA.

Steve looked Glen over from foot to head. It was odd, really. He'd never come across anyone he liked absolutely everything about before. The way Glen stood so flat-footed sometimes. The ass cheek peeking out from one side of his underwear. The slender line of his waist and the broad of his muscular shoulders. The consternation on his face when he was caught up in his own perfectionism. His complete lack of self-awareness. Those hands that pressed at Steve, so tender and so firm, sent him out of his mind and brought him rocketing back down to earth again. Steve wanted those hands on him now, but kept it to himself.

Glen stowed the box inside the nearest cupboard, next to Steve's connoisseur ground coffee. Steve allowed himself a small smile. He liked it when Glen stayed over. That crappy instant coffee was starting to smell like home.

Glen picked up the mug and gave the contents a cursory blow followed by a cautious sip. Satisfied, he leant back against the counter and looked over at Steve. He could have stayed in bed, let Steve make it for him. But Steve couldn't be trusted with the task of coffee-making, apparently. Not yet.

“You're not forced to rush out of here, you know. I can leave you a key.”

Glen stretched, toes clicking, drawing Steve's shirt tight across his chest. “Nah, it's fine. Doesn't take me long to get ready, I won't hold you up.” He noticed Steve looking. “What?” he said, peering levelly over his coffee.

“Nothing, I'm just thinking.”

“Dangerous ground,” Another sip, and a raised eyebrow.

If Glen kept this up he'd be spread all over the counter, coffee or no. Steve's fingertips ached for Glen's contours already. His cock had similar ideas, and he had to distract himself. “I think your mug would be more at home amongst your other junk, don't you?”

Glen just stared at him for a moment, then looked a little sad. He glanced down at his mug. “Point taken,” he muttered.

“Point taken, but in the wrong direction.” Steve told him, moving past him and heading for the hall. It was beyond time he was getting ready for work.

“What does that mean?” he heard Glen say. He smiled, refusing to make it any clearer, and started up the stairs. Glen's footsteps followed him. “Hey,”

Steve turned, foot on the second step, and put on his best enigmatic expression. “I'm just saying, if you absolutely had to pollute my place with more of your crap, I'd be okay with that.”

They stared at each other for a moment. He started up the stairs again. “Are you asking me to move in with you?” Glen said, incredulous.

“So what if I am?”

“You can't ask me to move in, you haven't even told me if you're in love with me yet!”

Steve stopped and peered at Glen over the stair bannister. He leaned forward slightly. “I love you.” he said. The colour seemed to drain from Glen's cheeks. This was fun, Steve decided. “Don't even think about bringing that sixties vase, though.” He narrowed his eyes. “Or that candelabra.”

“I inherited those!” Glen complained, brows furrowing. Then he waved a hand around in front of his face as though fending off wasps. “That's not even the point! You...! I...”

Steve was at the top of the stairs now. “I'm going to get dressed. Let me know when your linguistic faculties return so we can discuss this like adults.” he shouted down.

And then Glen was pelting up the stairs after him, grin wider than seemed possible, chasing Steve into the bedroom and grabbing him, kissing him as they both tipped back onto the bed. “I hate you, goddamn asshole,” Glen grinned into his ear, those dexterous hands assuring Steve that, in fact, quite the opposite was true.
